Dutch statenjachts were luxurious and representative vessels used for transporting important persons, officials, business representatives and guests. They were not intended for long ocean voyages, but mainly for sailing on rivers, estuaries, coastal waters and inland waterways. Their purpose was not only transport, but also the representation of wealth, status and the taste of their owners.
From the 16th and 17th centuries, this type of luxury vessel developed especially strongly in the Netherlands. The Republic of the United Netherlands grew wealthy through maritime trade, and its shipyards were able to create vessels that combined practicality, elegance and rich decoration. Statenjachts therefore often carried decorated sterns, galleries, figure decoration and other elements reflecting the taste and social importance of the period.
The Statenjacht Utrecht 1:72 model is based on the well-known Dutch yacht Utrecht. The present-day sailing replica of this vessel was built between 1998 and 2003 as a project aimed at restoring traditional craftsmanship skills. While the Replica Edition represents a version inspired by the present-day sailing replica, the Original 17th Century Version offers a historically richer appearance with more prominent decoration corresponding to representative vessels of the 17th century.
